Since 2013 ransomware has been attacking PC’s to lock and ransom personal files. In December of 2016 a new version has been hard at work infecting files. Ransomware will give you the option to pay to recover your files. You cannot always be guaranteed that the ransom payment will always get your files back.
If you do not wish to pay for your files, please reinstall your Operating System and Applications, but you will loose your data. If you backup to a USB stick, do not leave your USB stick plugged into the computer. Attached media can also be infected and ransomed.
We have found that using backup software that saves your personal files on an external device that can be removed is a good solution.
